Flexxing with DJ Naz

BEING one of the few Jamaican female disc jockeys Nazaria Davis, better known as DJ Naz describes her style of mixing as 'storytelling'.
Promoting her 'Gurl Power' brand, Naz has been creating a buzz since she entered the industry professionally three years ago, after placing third twice in the Heineken Green Synergy Competition.
She was surrounded by entertainers growing up, as her mother Joy White was a singer, her father Don Taylor was a former producer for Bob Marley, and her sister Mystic a professional dancer. It seemed that Naz could not escape her calling from the entertainment industry, which she didn't mind because she loves it.
She acquired her skill in studio engineering at the Music Technology Institute in 2004 and became a part of an all female sound system known as 'Chemical X' in 2006 where she was initially interested in making rhythms.
However, after the split from the group and her entry in the Green Synergy competition in 2009, she developed a love for mixing. She started practicing at the weekly 'Bembe Thursday' event where she would be spinning in the early hours of the night.
Being proud of her title as the first and only female entrant in the Heineken Green Synergy competition, Naz went on to add the Ms Fully Loaded title to her collection after winning the 45 Boom Competition.
A past student of the Donald Quarrie High School, Naz admires industry veterans such as Kurt Riley, Collin Hines and Alrick & Boyd. She also appreciates the help from her mentor Delano, and from friends Pablo and DJ Cide from Darkcide International.
With many accomplishments thus far, DJ Naz currently has one rotating rhythm known as 'name change' and is looking forward to more major events including the Guiness Sounds of Greatness clash in the Cayman Islands later this month.
She will also be the only female DJ representing Jamaica in an all-female show in St Maarten comprising of female DJs from across the Caribbean.
She emphasises that to be successful you have to know your music, and she advises young DJs to: "Learn how to mix and blend and stop using Virtual DJ because you will not learn anything, Even if you cannot afford to buy one, borrow from someone and learn."
